In October 1859, John Brown (an abolitionist) and 21 others raided Harpers Ferry, Virginia. After 2 days,
Brown had been captured and most of his crew had either died or fled. Abolitionists in the North had financed this raid.

William Wilberforce is one of the best known abolitionists. He supported and was the leader of the abolition movement. He lived just long enough to find out that his work had helped others. He had helped end slavery in England.

Frederick Douglass was a famous African American abolitionst. He was considered to be the "Father of the Civil Rights Movement. He ended up being the most famous African American of his time. He was born into a family of slavery, and escaped.
